Food & Drinks
Great food and drink options exist all over Baja Sur. Here are my favorites so far in San Jose, Cabo, Todos Santos, and La Paz.
San Jose del Cabo
-
Kitchen Table
This farm-to-table restaurant in downtown SJ was where I chose to have my birthday dinner. It’s on a rooftop, very aesthetic, and the food is top notch. The drinks are delicious and skillfully crafted while the food is high quality and locally sourced leading to a seasonally changing menu. My favorites are the sourdough bread with smoked butter and sea salt, old school steak, sweet potato banuelos, and catch of the day plate. Did I mention the sourdough bread? It’s worth a visit just for that.
-
Flora Farms
This experience is very popular and for good reason. The field to table restaurant offers good food and tasty drinks. The dough they use for pizza is cooked perfectly and all the ingredients are fresh and bold. You can walk around the property and enjoy the gardens, water features, and some shops. They have a spa and host movie nights and a variety of classes. I added Flora to our list because it’s more than just a great food experience. Acre and Tamarindo’s are similar style places to also consider if you’re looking for a full experience.
-
La Lupita
If being in Cabo has you craving tacos, this place has every type of well crafted tacos featuring steak, pork, lamb, chicken, fish, veggies, and more. They also have various drink options and flights to try tequilas, mezcals, and other spirits. The back area is outside and has a raised stage and open roof which makes for a cool night scene. I think this is the best option if you’re craving a taco experience with a lot of variety. They get busy on the weekends so make a reservation to avoid waiting outside.
-
Nicksan
This sushi place has two locations but the San Jose location is more elegant and visually stunning. In our opinion, it’s the best sushi in Cabo. Every piece is perfectly crafted, super fresh, and a pleasing experience with a Japanese-Spanish fusion. On top of the luxurious interior, the service here is seriously top notch. When you finish your drink, it's refilled in seconds. Empty plates are cleared before you can think about it. This place is a wonderful experience for both the high quality food and the incredibly attentive service.
-
Barrio del Tango
This Argentinian restaurant has some incredible cuts of meat. We’ve tried a few different cuts and they are always top grade and cooked perfectly from the wood grill. The table bread and sauces are very good, the roasted potatoes are in a light cream sauce, and the vegetable mix is a great addition to the meal. Empanada appetizers are light and crispy. The spicy sausage is packed with flavor. Everything we’ve had here has been really good. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu here, easily making it our favorite steak place.
-
Come A Casa
To satisfy that Italian food craving, look no further than Come A Casa in downtown San Jose. Just a block away from the main plaza, the restaurant has bar seating where you can watch the chefs prepare your dish, a wood-fired oven to make perfect pizza crust an sourdough, and a clean and modern ambiance.
We tried the calamari which were perfectly cooked and breaded so they just melted in your mouth. The bruschetta was delicious and the short rib pasta was savory yet light. I had a funghi pizza that would give any pizza you’ve ever had a run for its money. We also found the prices were incredibly fair. We’ll be back.
-
Tropico - Cocina de Costa
This low-key taco spot has our favorite battered fish and shrimp tacos. It’s in a plaza along Blvd. Antonia Mijares between the beachfront hotels and the San Jose plaza. Tacos are only 45 pesos, the ingredients are fresh based on what has been locally caught, and the flavor with the two salsas they provide is amazing. I go here at least once a week because it’s well priced and incredibly tasty. Lola, the owner’s dog, is super happy to see patrons and will welcome you to the restaurant.
-
Taqueria Mexico
We’ve tried pastor tacos all over Baja and these are our number one. The pastor is browned and shaved fresh right into the tortilla. The maiz tortillas, which we highly recommend, are homemade and the colors of the Mexican flag from all natural dye. Together with some fresh pineapple, onion, cilantro, and lime, these tacos are amazing. They also have good fish ceviche served in a pineapple, coconut shrimp, and drinks which they pour the booze at the table (they always pour heavy). The restaurant is under a giant palapa and has beautiful traditional design and decorations which gives it a nice ambiance.
-
Santoro
I’m bummed it took me over a year to try this place. Located in the main plaza above a jewelry store, the ambiance here is chic and Instagram worthy.
They make a variety of well crafted cocktails and the food surpassed our expectations. The shrimp-stuffed chile relleno are the best I’ve ever had, and if you’re a shrimp taco fan, the tacos come stuffed to the max and battered in a well seasoned mix.
Last, but certainly not least, is the amazing view you get at sunset as the sun fades behind the church and mountains and the lights of the plaza come on.
-
District MX
Trying to catch a game? District will have it. And if they don’t, just ask and they’ll gladly switch one of the many tvs to accommodate what you’re trying to watch. They have good food and drinks with an upscale bar food vibe. I recommend the lettuce wraps and short rib poutine.
-
Sage
Among the amazing dining experiences in downtown San Jose is Sage. Every aspect of the experience feels well thought out. The ambiance is sophisticated but comfortable. Each dish gave the impression it received the final touches from an experiences chef before being placed on your table. The calamari was the best I’ve ever had (pictured). We also enjoyed crispy chicken, bone marrow pasta, and well crafted cocktails.
-
Corleone
If you want pizza, it has to be Corleone. This is the best pizza I’ve had in Cabo. As a New Yorker, I’m a harsh critic on pizza. The pies here have a slightly doughy crust that is still crispy, the sauce has flavor but isn’t spicy or overly sweet, there’s a great balance of sauce, cheese, and toppings, and it’s not greasy. No bites are left in the box from this place.
-
Cafe Dona Nena
This is my favorite cafe in San Jose. Located inside Plaza Don Carlos along the main road into town, the cafe shares a beautiful open seating area with plenty of tables. They have all the coffee options you’d expect, some food options, WIFI, and there are other shops in the plaza as well. The coffee has a great flavor and all the food I’ve had has been good.
-
Pulpito
Located above Pulpito in the hotel zone, across from the Royal Solaris Hotel, this aesthetic bar is one of the few late night spots in San Jose. The drinks are well made and you can people watch on the open balcony from a comfortable chair.
-
Pietro’s
If you’re craving italian, this downtown SJ eatery has a beautiful outdoor dining patio after you pass through a short stone tunnel. The pizza and breads are baked in the stonefire oven which gives them a crunchy outside but doughy inside. The signature raspberry martini came out bright red with 3 raspberries on a stainless steel skewer and was one my favorite drinks in Cabo. The pizza, pasta carbonara, calamari and everything else we ordered was very good. We’ve been back a few times.
-
Pan Springs
This place makes their own breads and doughs that they use in their dishes. Although I think it’s mainly a bread and coffee spot, we love their lasagna and boneless buffalo wings (best we’ve had in Cabo). They also make good pizza. If you eat in the restaurant, it’s sort of a palm springs spin off vibe and quite aesthetic. The bella salad with tuna was also a really good choice.
-
Chik'n Doo
This is our favorite chicken in Cabo. They specialize in gourmet pollo asado. Choose from rosemary, Thai, al pastor and more. The chicken is cooked rotisserie style and comes with your choice of sides, some sauces, tortillas, and limes. The chicken is juicy and full of flavor. They have side orders from which we’ve really enjoyed the roasted potatoes and grilled vegetable mix. You have to order before 5 and they sell out quick! This place is great for a quick and delicious meal to pick up on the way home from work as they don’t really have a seating area.
-
Tamarindos
Another one of San Jose’s great farm-to-table restaurants. The drive to Tamarindos is less than 10 minutes from downtown but makes you feel like you’re away from it all. The ambiance is a blend of farm and elegance. Our server was knowledgeable on the menu and the perfect level of attentive without being disruptive. My one complaint is the menu had too many delicious options to choose from that I found myself wanting to order three entrées. We ultimately went with the lemon grass farm-raised hen with chimichurri and pesto and the steak. It was the first time our steak was cooked perfectly medium rare (we usually find it is overcooked). The quality of the food was apparent on first taste, as you’d hope from a farm-to-table experience. The cocktails were stiff and tasty and they had a good selection of wines. We will be back.
-
Tap Deck
This place has my wife’s favorite wings. The place is as the name suggests on a deck and has an open view of the nearby park. They also have good pizza and a really good arugula salad with shaved parmesan.
-
Chubby Noodle SJ
When looking for Asian food in Cabo, Chubby Noodle has consistently been an excellent choice. They have now opened a location in the Merkado in San Jose del Cabo corridor. The Merkado is a huge open building consisting of various restaurants and drink spots right off the highway. This location’s menu is different from San Lucas, so while you can’t get the Taiwanese ribs here, you can try other new options like the beef curry ramen, which was unique and delicious (pictured here). They do have a few of the same items like the firecracker chicken.
-
Bao Bap
Bao Bap is a little corner spot on the way to downtown San Jose that shares the building with Egg Luv (great breakfast sandwiches). The chef at Bao Bap specializes in Asian cuisine and changes his menu regularly to keep things exciting. The Bao buns are light and fluffy and both the fried chicken and pork belly are delicous. If you’re craving well-crafted asian noodles or appetizers, this is your place.
-
Tacos Rossy
A local favorite, this spot is a go-to for inexpensive seafood tacos. We always get the shrimp. They come out with no toppings and you add whatever you want at the stacked buffet style toppings bar. The slaw and pico are delicious and really good on a fried shrimp taco.
-
Sublime Burger
Cravings for American food sometimes hit and this burger more than satisfies. This food truck with a covered seating area is deeper in San Jose but worth the drive if you’re craving the best burger around. The perfect, fresh bun and flavorful patty combine for a mouthwatering experience. They come with good fries and a garlicky ranch.
-
EL Jalisciense Birrieria
If you’ve never had birria, it might just change your life. Birria is stewed meat often made from beef and often served with broth. Located off highway 1 in San Jose, behind Taqueria Rossy, this birrieria only serves birria and they do it well. You can get the birria in a variety of ways from crispy, to in a soup, to a quesadilla with cheese. The place is always crowded with locals and very close to downtown. It is also cash only.
-
In Memory Of Yooko Izakaya
After eating here we said it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had. The restaurant is based on asian neighborhood foods cooked with local products. Our waiter was highly knowledgeable on the menu and preparation of all menu items and for this reason we got all of his suggestions. It was my first time both having nigiri with shaved truffle and Okonomiyaki (a sort of Japanese short-rib pizza). The shrimp was so big and delicious it reminded me of a lobster tail and the ribeye was seasoned well and very flavorful. Each bite made you pause and close your eyes to enjoy the flavors.
This restaurant has sadly closed.
Cabo San Lucas
-
Baja Brewing - Cabo Villa Rooftop
Great spot by the marina to enjoy the original craft beer of Los Cabos with amazing views of Medano beach, the Arch, and Land’s End. Valet your car at Hotel Corazon (100 pesos with food/drink receipt) and walk through the hotel and down the stairs next to the outdoor terrace. You’ll see Baja Brewing signs which direct you to take the elevator up to the entrance of the brewery. There is plenty of seating and lots to watch at the beaches down below. The food is decent but I really come here for La Surfa pilsner and a great view.
-
Tacos Gardenias
Taco spot with great prices and great food. I stop by for lunch almost weekly and get a couple burritos (not Chipotle size) with grilled shrimp and conchita pibil which is a slow-roasted shredded pork. They make good ceviche and have breakfast burritos with fresh squeezed orange juice in the morning. The dining area is open and airy and it’s located just a block away from the marina. They have a lot to choose from and the toppings are on the side you can make the tacos just the way you like them.
-
Los Origenes Tacos & Beer
Great spot to stop at if you just finished shopping at the mall or walking around the marina area. They have seating on the dock where you can enjoy your meal and watch the boats. They have a variety of tacos and other Mexican fare. We liked the barbacoa tacos and I thought the cajun shrimp taco was worth coming back for. The drinks are fun and can be ordered in coconuts and pineapples.
-
Chubby Noodle
In my opinion, good asian food, with the exception of sushi, can be hard to find in Cabo. This asian fusion restaurant satisfied our craving for Thai and Korean food. They have glazed Thai ribs that come right off the bone, different noodle dishes, soups, and amazing Szechuan green beans (sometimes they serve asparagus instead). With the variety here you’ll be sure to find something you’ve been craving.
-
La Pintada
Right on the main road in Cabo, this restaurant offers indoor seating with a beautiful mixed aesthetic. The service was excellent and we loved the Guerrero Negro style red snapper. The fish was butterflied and perfectly seasoned. The wait staff was friendly and joked around with us which enhanced our experience.
-
Rooftop 360
We went here for New Years and had a blast. The view of the surrounding area is as the name suggests, 360 degrees. The bar is massive and has every alcohol you could want. The food we had was good including the sushi, and king ceviche. The style, furniture, and ambiance are upscale and fun.
-
Mango Deck
With seating right on the sand of Medano Beach, Mango Deck is open seven days a week and has a fun vibe. They have a variety of food and drink options and host a lot of events. Staff and patrons are often dancing on stage and the crowd can get rowdy during peak season. If you’re staying in Cabo and looking for a fun time, this is your place.
Todos Santos & La Paz
-
Oystera
Oystera oyster bar in Todos Santos is situated in a beautiful building with an outside garden eating area and views of nature. The oysters are always fresh, served on ice-cold river stones, and accompanied by lemon, three delicious sauces, and a black habanero paste that makes it unique. A professional oystershucker walks around telling tables about the different oysters and offering freshly shucked samples. We are big Kumamoto fans but he introduced us to Sol Azul oysters farmed right here in Baja California that I thought were just as good! The drinks are good, especially the mojitos. If you want oysters in a beautiful environment, this is the spot. We stop in every time we visit Todo Santos.
-
The Green Room
The Green Room is a bit outside Todos Santos but absolutely worth the 20 minute drive. With a cool, winding bush path to the beachfront seating area, this place Is a cool experience before you even sit down.
Enjoy the quality food and well crafted cocktails with your feet in the sand after a day of exploring Todos Santos. I suggest making a reservation as they get quite busy.
After dinner, relax on the sand or around the fire pit while enjoying a carajillo.
-
Mauriscos Los Laureles
This seafood restaurant in La Paz has nice bay views and the best fried fish we’ve had. It’s a whole fried fish and you can get it in a variety of styles but we haven’t tried any after having the garlic one. We’ve tried a lot of fried fish since moving here and this one stands out. The fish skin is crispy and flavorful and the meat is juicy. The garlic option comes fried with chopped garlic all over which enhances the other seasonings in the breading. They do run out of the fish they use for this meal since it’s caught fresh. So we recommend eating a little earlier in the day. If you don’t want the whole fish, you can get the same meal but with fish nuggets.
-
Carnitas TADEO
Baja is known for its seafood like Michoacan is know for its carnitas. I’m a big carnitas fan so I try to stop at places around the peninsula. This place in Todos Santos is my favorite so far. The meat has a great flavor which is enhanced by getting it with cueritos (pork skin). Their green salsa is super flavorful and not too spicy which compliments the meat incredibly well. I’ve driven to Todo Santos just to eat here.
-
Fish Taco Santo Chilote
Diagonal to Oystera in Todos Santos, this restaurant sits on the corner of the main street when you enter the town. They have great fish tacos and coconut shrimp. Stop in if you want good traditional Mexican food in a peaceful setting.
-
Santo Remedio Bar
On the same street as Hotel California in Todos Santos, this bar has seats around a tree and lively bartenders. The drinks they make are with fresh fruit and ingredients, not pre-made mixes. We had margaritas, mojitos, and really good micheladas.
